Whether we like to admit it or not, money is part of almost every aspect of our lives.
Some people don’t want to admit that money needs to be taken seriously. Or maybe they have a hard time with the fact that all of our lives revolve around money.
Unless you are up in Alaska living on the land with no support from others this is true for everyone. But if you saw Into the Wild you know how that works out.
Money is a symbol of wealth, it’s a means of trade, and often a form of security. We will dive into what money means to you in a later post but for now I want you to notice what aspects of your life involve money. Just go through your normal day and as you pick something up, as you walk through a building, as you make a decision on what to do or where to go next, notice how money plays into that.
Here is an example.
This morning I woke up in my comfy bed, that cost money. I turned on the light, which cost money every month. I read my book that I spent money on. (Maybe I could have gotten it from the library, but I would have had to pay for gas to get to the library). I ate breakfast from my fridge. Money was spent on the food and the electricity to keep the fridge cold, and the fridge itself. Oh don’t forget the spoon and bowl. I have plans to go to lunch with a friend. I will buy my food, maybe a drink, pay for gas to get there. I even paid for the car. I could have decided to stay home and eat in, but that decision involved money as well.
Eating, sleeping, traveling, studying, exercising, date nights, nights in… the list goes on. They all cost money.
So I think it’s clear that money involves so much of our lives. We make decisions about money every single day. So why is it that so many people don’t understand much about it?
I think a lot of us don’t want to have to think about it all the time. We put it in the back seat and don’t worry about it until we are forced to. We are in denial about it.
Some of us may think about it just enough, but we haven’t sent the time to learn about its intricacies. We just go with the flow. We may have learned a few things from family, school or experience and we find what works and kind of sort of make it work.
There are also those of us who may think about money too much. Imagine going through your day like I did above and every decision you make you think about money. That doesn’t seem so healthy to me.
There is a balance and the first step is knowing that money is important and even more so, knowing how to manage your money is the most important. I am here to teach you how to manage your money. Educate you on best practices and give you a chance to learn what works for you, and actually make it work. Whether you leave your money in the back seat and forget about it, try a million things that never seem to work, or over analyze everything, we will work on improving our mindset and behavior around money together.
I know it’s not always easy diving into a topic that is taboo or frightening. But a wise man once said, knowledge is power. And if knowledge about one of the most powerful things in the world(money) is what you seek, I am here to help you.
